Hedge & Shrub Trimming for Fairfield properties

Fairfield gives us two different trimming jobs, and they come from two different eras of building. The original postwar streets around Symmes Corner, Fairplay and Stockton have foundation plantings that went in with the house, and a lot of those are yews and junipers sitting a foot off the brick with your windows lost behind them. Those come back over two or three cuts across a couple of seasons, not in one afternoon. The newer subdivisions have young shrubs that only need shaping so they do not go leggy and bare at the base. One thing we watch on flat Fairfield ground: a shrub in the corner that holds water after every storm is already stressed at the roots, and a hard cut on top of that is what finishes it. Those get shaped lightly and left alone.

Most of Fairfield sits on flat, evenly graded lots, so the mowing is fast and the stripes run clean. The trade off is water. Flat ground on Butler County clay does not drain, and the low corner of the yard stays soft for days after a storm. Around Symmes Corner and the older Fairplay and Stockton streets the lots are larger with established plantings that need real trimming. Newer sections toward Indian Springs and Fairfield East have younger trees and thinner turf that responds well to fall aeration.

What Fairfield properties run into

  • Flat lots on clay soil that hold water in the low corner after every rain
  • Thin builder turf in the newer sections that goes patchy by August
  • Commercial lots along the Route 4 corridor that have to be open early

What is included

  • Shaped, not just shortened

Hedges get cut slightly wider at the bottom than the top so light reaches the lower branches. That is what stops a hedge going bare and woody at the base.

  • Timed to the plant

Cutting a spring flowering shrub at the wrong time removes next season flowers. We time the cut to the plant instead of trimming everything the same week.

  • Overgrown recovery

Shrubs that have not been touched in years usually cannot be fixed in one cut. We take it back over a couple of seasons so the plant survives it.

  • Clippings hauled off

Everything we cut leaves on the trailer. No pile behind the garage.

What it costs

Trimming is priced by how many shrubs there are, how overgrown they have gotten, and whether we are hauling the clippings away. Estimates in Fairfield are free.

Hedge & Shrub Trimming questions

When should hedges be trimmed?

It depends on the plant. Most evergreens take a trim in late spring and again in midsummer. Spring flowering shrubs should be cut right after they bloom, because cutting them later removes the flowers you would have had next year.

Can you fix badly overgrown shrubs?

Usually, but not in one cut. Taking too much off an overgrown shrub at once can kill it. We bring it back over two or three cuts across a couple of seasons so the plant survives the reduction.

Do you take the clippings with you?

Yes. Everything we cut gets loaded and hauled off unless you want it left for your own compost.
